James Lawrence is a cartoonist, illustrator and lecturer, best known for The Legend of La Mariposa, an all-ages fantasy-action-comedy series of graphic novels of which the latest volume, The Sweetest Crime, was nominated for an Ignatz Award in 2024.

James produces energetic, colourful work for middle-grade and YA audiences and specialises in high-octane action, cartoonish humour and bold characters adventuring in immersive environments.  His stories explore themes of identity, heritage, responsibility and the duties and consequences of power.

James recently completed his Master’s degree in Illustration with Graphic Novel at Leeds Arts University, where he wrote his dissertation in visual depictions of sound in comics.  When he’s not working, he likes to spend his time growing vegetables, perfecting his barbecue game and training in Catch-As-Catch-Can Wrestling.
